about

All funds from the sales of FERVID will be donated PEN International (pen-international.org), an organization that Ig has recommended. PEN International stands for "helping to promote cultural understanding and fight for persecuted writers, safeguard civil society and education programs worldwide, defend freedom of expression, protect writers at risk, defend linguistic rights, and promote literature across frontiers. For PEN International a writer can be a novelist, poet, journalist, academic, publisher, translator, blogger, biographer, playwright, etc.– in short, it refers to anyone involved with the written or spoken word. This broad definition is what truly makes them the worldwide movement that they are."

linernotes:
March 2020: because of the global shutdown in response to the coronavirus, there is room to check out recordings from the past. It's the first time I listened back to this concert recorded in Haarlem in 2010. And I was really surprised by the spontaneity, imagination and energy the group showed that afternoon, halfway through our tour. The organ gives the concert a fantastic extra sound. It does not happen often that I am happy with 'things' from the past. I decided to use this music, so dear to me, as a submission for the Catalytic Artist Album series of unreleased recordings.

The year 2010: in celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of being a composer/bandleader and my sixty-fifth birthday, I started a new international group: the Ig Henneman Sextet. During the long European tour I invited guests in different cities. Because I knew the Philharmonie in Haarlem had a beautiful Cavaillé-Coll organ in the hall, I asked Guus Janssen to improvise on an organ theme I wrote for the 47th International Organ Improvisation Competition in Haarlem. Guus would also join the sextet for a tutti improvisation on another organ theme of mine, 'A Far Cry.'

The sextet consists of a select group of musicians I regarded as musical kindred spirits. Five musicians I had worked with before, and one newcomer who I could finally invite to collaborate: Wilbert de Joode (NL) on bass, Ab Baars (NL) on tenor sax, clarinet and shakuhachi, Lori Freedman (CA) on bass clarinet and clarinet, Marilyn Lerner (CA) on piano, and the new collaboration with Axel Dörner (DE) on trumpet. The Bimhuis, Amsterdam recording culminated in the CD 'Cut a Caper' (Wig 19, 2011), and the following Canadian tour in the CD 'Live @ the Ironworks Vancouver' (Wig 21, 2012).

They say:
(...) It might seem odd to write elaborate, chamber-ish compositions when your band includes top-flight improvisers like trumpeter Axel Dörner and reedist Ab Baars, but violist Ig Henneman strikes a meticulous balance with her sextet on Live @ the Ironworks Vancouver (Wig21; 48:25****), where the personnel brings electricity to her writing.
--Peter Margasak Downbeat February 2013

(...) Just like Ustvolskya Henneman asks a fearless attitude from the listener. One who listens attentively will be rewarded with sharp, uncommon colored music.
--Mischa Andriessen Trouw Januari 18, 2013

(...) In this way Henneman developed a complete own language that shines with purity and authenticity (...) the six members own strong personalities that they like to show with guts, patience and measured discretion.
--Tim Sprangers Jazzinternationalrotterdam.nl

(...) The Sextet's chamber works, such as these composed tracks, paired with the restrained and disciplined improvising of virtuoso performers makes for a great experience.
--Mark Corroto allaboutjazz.com January 25, 2013

(...) Ig Henneman's compositions are not jazz. "Prelude...", as well as other pieces like "Bold Swagger" present a vision of music that yields toward freedom and expressivity of radical improvisation but are born from the classical sensibility of XXth century avant-guarde music (...) "Live @ the Ironworks Vancouver" takes the best of both musical worlds with staggering results.
---Jazzowy Alchemik April 19, 2013

(…)The absence of a drummer makes that the six musicians cannot lean backwards. The intern rhythmic motor has to turn in the overdrive now and that makes a highest concentration that gives a fascinating earplay for the full 48 minutes
Herman te Loo Jazzflits 22 oktober 2012

(…) The brutality displayed by the sextet will leave your jaw dropping in astonishment… The greatest merit of Ig Henneman on ‘Cut a Caper’ is that she gives new tools to transform the Dutch improvised music of the past into the present.
--Rinus van der Heijden – Jazzenzo Jazzmagazine September 2011

(…) For those not familiar with Henneman’s work, ‘Cut a Caper’ is the stepping stone of their dreams: a gem of an album."
--Koen Van Meel, Kwadratuur Belgium September 2011

((…)  It is a music that crackles with surprise, yet radiates the audience with the glow of its acoustic timbres.
--David Lee, author of The Battle of the Five Spot: Ornette Coleman and the New York Jazz Field

FIMAV festival Victoriaville 2011
"It wasn't jazz, it wasn't modern classical, it was cool."
--Bruce Lee Gallanter (Downtown Music Gallery, NY)
